1.Introduction
Human Resource Management (HRM) is about hiring, training, managing, and supporting employees in a company. It ensures that the right people are in the right jobs and that they have the skills and motivation to perform well. HRM also includes areas like employee engagement, performance management, and workplace policies (Armstrong, 2021).
Every company needs HRM because employees are the most valuable asset of a business. A strong HRM system helps to keep employees happy, reduce staff turnover, and improve productivity. It also ensures that businesses follow proper labor laws and create a positive work environment (Bratton & Gold, 2017).
In this blog, I will discuss how HRM can improve employee engagement and retention in the Sri Lankan apparel industry by looking at common challenges and solutions.
The apparel Industry is one of Sri Lanka's most significant economic contributors,employing over 350,000 workers and generating billions in export revenue(Export Development Board,2023).Workers in this industry are important not only for the companies they work for but also for the entire country.The apparel sector accounts for around 50% of the country's total export revenue,making it a key player in Sri Lanka's economy.With many people employed in this industry,the apparel sector supports not the workers but also their families and communities.The jobs provided are essential for improving living standards and reducing poverty in the country.
However ,the industry struggles with high employee turnover,low engagement, and limited career growth opportunities.Many workers leave their jobs due to low wages,long working hours and lack of job satisfaction.High turnover negatively affects companies,leading to increased recruitment costs,disrupted production and decreases efficiency.To remain competitive ,apparel companies must prioritise employee engagement and retention.
